RE: Request recommendations for surge protector

I was going to recommend the Progressive Industries HW50C but I see that someone else has beat me to it. I have the HW30C in my 30 amp rig.

RE: Water heater

On our Coachmen Freelander, our water heater comes on for 8 minutes and then shuts off. We get approximately 2 cups of warm water. We tried turning on the water heater a couple times with the same results. Does anyone out there have suggestions for us to try? Welcome Francine_Gary. I am your next door neighbor. Glad you found the site.

RE: Converter upgrade question

Bobbo Why do you want to change the old one out? Take your pick: 1. I wanted a 3 stage charger, and my 7345 isn't. 2. I like to cause trouble. Look at some of the arguments that have erupted from the other threads I have started. :D

RE: Inverter, then Surge

The ONLY thing before my PI HW30C is the generator/shore power!

RE: Converter upgrade question

As you can see from my note above, I sure wouldn't waste the money on this. Do you have a good surge protection system, or an autoformer? I would put both of those upgrades ahead of this for the conditions of use you cite. Or perhaps some of the driveability/handling improvements. Or perhaps an automatic satellite tv system. Or ....... Yep, got the Progressive Industries HW30C. My rig is 9 months old, but I plan to keep her for 30 years. I am installing ALL the toys. How many reports of Wfco converters not going into bulk charge mode..does it take to make it a bad converter ? The only good thing about that conversion, is that its easy to put in. It is overpriced, and its performance as a hi charge rate charger is poor, and no better than what you have now. I guess I will pass on the converter upgrade though. When will Xantrex or PD make a drop-in replacement for the Parallax 7345? :D

RE: Question on engine antifreeze (not the pink stuff)

The OP here. Mine is a gasser. For those interested, the Ford dealer gets $15 a gallon for the Premium Gold. I got 2 gallons. When mixed 50/50 that gives me 4 gallons. That should easily last till I need to drain and flush.

RE: Which Size Air Hose will Pass the most air pressure?

Once the air hose has reached pressure, which won't take long, the limiting factor will be the air flow through the valve stem. Unless you have an air hose so small that it passes less air than the valve stem, there will be no discernable difference.

RE: Converter upgrade question

Is it worth $200.. I don't know For one reason I like the Progressive Dynamics 9200 converters better than just about anything else on the market For another reason the Xantrex XADC line takes top honors In both cases there are others that are just as good This one is not one of 'em What I don't know, since I have not compared prices, is if the difference in price is greater than the difference in performance. As someone up-thread said.. Many folks are happy with the WFCO converters I know I'm very happy with both my PD and my Xantrex And though Randy and I don't always agree on what is best.. He don't sell junk Just as reference, what does the PD and Xantrex do that the WFCO doesn't? As a plug it in and forget about it (except for checking water levels) I want the one that is best for my type of usage. Over 95% of the time I am camping with shore power (about a week every other month), or it is in storage with no power. Of course, the best for my usage may just be to leave it well enough alone. It is still new as I bought it new last September.

Question on engine antifreeze (not the pink stuff)

I have a Ford E450 that needs a little antifreeze in the reservoir. Ford says use the yellow stuff, not the orange stuff. The question is, can I safely use Prestone's green stuff that says safe for ALL systems using ALL kinds of antifreeze? Generally I trust Prestone, but I want to be sure.

RE: My computer was saved by RAID

But I strongly suggest you consider devising a modified backup schedule of your most critical data that you can burn to a set of removable disks or flash drives every so often. Just toss 'em in your fire safe. It's cheap insurance, and won't cost you anything extra. My critical data is already being written to a USB drive that goes in my pocket. I only have 2 directories with what I absolutely can't lose, and I copy the whole directory.

Converter upgrade question

My 2007 Winnebago Outlook 31C has a Parallax 7345 Converter. Is this Upgrade Kit worth the $200+ price? How does it compare to the Progressive Dynamics and Xantrex units? Since it is basically plug and play, I would consider getting it if it is good quality. On edit, it is a 7345 Converter, not a 6345 Converter.

RE: Early statements

I just got a reminder from Good Sams to renew. I pulled out my Good Sams card and it says it expires on 10/08. I logged onto the Good Sams web site and it says I don't expire till 10/10. I just need a new card.

RE: My computer was saved by RAID

My computer was equipped with a RAID capable drive controller and I configured the RAID controller to mirror the first drive on the second. When the first drive failed, the computer booted up normally off of the second drive and told me the first drive was non-functional. I lost NOTHING. OK, I'm sold. I've already got 2 drives and copy pictures and music to the 2nd drive. How do I set this up? I lost a drive once and lost some pictures that I didn't have backed up. Do you have a RAID capable SATA controller? If so, check your documentation that came with it. I know how mine works, but I am sure it is not universal. I just had to install the drive like I was going to make it drive D: then use "Intel Matrix Storage Console," which is a program installed on the computer by the manufacturer to configure it as a RAID 1 drive.

RE: My computer was saved by RAID

I appreciate all of the advice about how to further protect my computer from fire, theft, virii, etc., but I think I will stick with just RAID 1. While I know I could lose it all to the above causes, I have Mcafee, Ad-Aware and a hardware firewall. I will risk fires and theft. However, everyone WILL eventually have a hard drive failure if they keep their computer long enough. My previous computer went through 4 hard drives before I retired it. (I keep a computer a LONG time.) I am now on the second drive for this computer, not counting the second drive in the RAID array. I just think the odds of the other risks are too low for me to worry about, unlike the odds of a hard drive failure which approach 100% given enough time.

My computer was saved by RAID

Just a word of warning. My 18 month old computer had its hard drive suddenly fail 2 days ago. There was no warning, it just stopped. Fortunately, 6 months ago I decided to spend a little money, and added a second hard drive of the same capacity. My computer was equipped with a RAID capable drive controller and I configured the RAID controller to mirror the first drive on the second. When the first drive failed, the computer booted up normally off of the second drive and told me the first drive was non-functional. I lost NOTHING. I immediately went and bought a replacement drive for the dead one. As soon as I put it in, the RAID controller asked if I wanted to mirror the operational drive on the new one. I clicked yes, and again have 2 hard drives in my system. The only way I will lose any data is if BOTH hard drives fail at once. I figure that would be some kind of catastrophic event that would destroy the computer itself. My RAID capable SATA drive controller is built into the motherboard, but they can be bought as add in cards.

RE: Satellite Problem

We have two tv locations in our trailer. Neither location will work when the satellite is hooked up at the trailer locations. We tried with the amp/booster on and off and no difference. The coax we are using is for satellite applications and does work when wired directly to the sat. box(by-passing the traier wiring) In your quote you state it works when by-passing the traier{sic} wiring. That is exactly what I was talking about. Install another COAX that permanently bypasses the existing trailer wiring. It was the only way I got satellite into my rig.

RE: Security of a high speed internet connection

To the OP, you list "Adware" rather than "Ad-Aware." Note that they are NOT the same. Ad-Aware (from Lavasoft) is a wonderful program, and I would not have a computer that it is not run on at least once a week. Adware is spyware masquerading under a name similar to Ad-Aware. Be ABSOLUTELY SURE that you don't have Adware on your computer!

RE: Which is better

The A will have the V-10 3 vlave engine. The C will have the V-10 2 valve engine. So the HP will be different in the 2 engines. I thought the 2v had been phased out around 2006. 3v seems to be a way better motor, make sure that is what you get. The 2 valve is still used in the "E" line of chassis (E350, E450) due to the excessive heat put off by the 3 valve engine being too much for the doghouse type of engine cover.

RE: Newbie, wanta be, now confused even more.

First off, I do not want nor need slide outs. When I want to stop, I want to pull in , fire up the AC ( if it is not already running) turn on the water heater, and step to the back and have a glass of chilled wine that has been in the reefer all day. Make some dinner, turn on TV or not,, and rest. Or read or what ever.. I DO NOT want to have to put up with the dang slides. YOU know? I've got a good friend who sold RV's for 30 years until he retired, and he advised me to get the slide even though I wasn't interested in it. He said its resale value would remain MUCH higher. I bought one that has a slide that doesn't block anything if it is not put out. If we take the dogs, we put out the slide to give them room. If we don't take the dogs, we don't bother putting out the slide. I got to where I really don’t like the front overhangs with the , to me, useless extras bed up there either. Besides which it blocks the view outside. A rig without the overhang, with the large windows for the scenic view outside is a Class A. A Class B, Class B+ (aka Class C- or Micro C) all have an overhang, more or less, and the restricted view of the van windshield. I got the Class C with the overhang, but it does not have the useless bed. It has an entertainment center and lots of storage. Here on this site I will often see a post and really makes sense,, but dang I can never find it again,, is there a way to mark it someway? Below the last post on the page, there is a list of commands in a line. One of them is "SUBSCRIBE." Click on it and you will be subscribed to that thread. Now, when you log on, click on the button at the top right of the page that says "MY FORUMS." It will take you to a list of all of the threads you have subscribed to. (and when is someone going to make a dictionary of all the secret codes you all use? ) This link FAQs has links to all sorts of information, like the abbreviations used, the emoticons, posting pictures, and all kinds of other useful stuff about this web site.
